Synthesis and Reflection:

Media Law: A new concept I learned about with media law is Libel and Slander is the publication of a false statement that injures someones reputation. An example of slander would be a certain person cheated on their taxes, or committed tax fraud, but the real definition is making false or damaging statements about someone. Libel is a written defamation of a character, and an example of this would be writing a false malicious statement on a sign or publication, damaging a person.

This new concept taught me to always give the 100% truth when writing, because sending out a false message about someone, could drag me into bigger problems that lead into more and more lies.

Fake News: A new concept I learned with fake news is "clickbait." I've been familiar with clickbait for awhile but I can definitely say I digged a lot deeper into it, and doing a project around it really helped. Clickbait is mostly used with social media including Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and a lot of other news artciles. It is used to get more followers, likes, to attention towards posts that will make you click(bait). To find out more about clickbait with more details:

I've learned a lot more about how to find out what articles, posts, information, and more, is fake. One of the things I learned is how to tell if a social media is using you for views and likes. For example, if Youtube wants to use you for likes or views, they'll put exclamation points and capital letters in their title to draw attention to you. As well as a thumbnail that draws your eyes.

  1. You say defamation and libel "could drag me into bigger problems that lead into more and more lies." What is an example or a hypothetical you could use to substantiate this? How do you think reporters fall down the "slippery slope" as we discuss in class?

With regard to fake news, what are practices you could put in place to make sure you can avoid these issues? How else can you tell which articles, posts, information, and more, are fake? I like that you put the link in for your presentation!
