Synthesis and Reflection Blog Post

Claire Wicke P.6 Intro to Media Synthesis and Reflection:  Media Law: A new concept I learned about with media law is Libel and Slander is the publication of a false statement that injures someones reputation. An example of slander would be a certain person cheated on their taxes, or committed tax fraud, but the real definition is making false or damaging statements about someone. Libel is a written defamation of a character, and an example of this would be writing a false malicious statement on a sign or publication, damaging a person. This new concept taught me to always give the 100% truth when writing, because sending out a false message about someone, could drag me into bigger problems that lead into more and more lies.  Fake News: A new concept I learned with fake news is "clickbait." I've been familiar with clickbait for awhile but I can definitely say I digged a lot deeper into it, and doing a project around it really helped. Clickbait is mo...

Claire Wicke  Intro to Media P.6 Web Filters at School: Something that is very commonly known at school is that teens are very into their phones. They use their phones for many different reasons including, social media, texting, taking photos, playing games, searching the internet and a lot more. But, have you ever been connected to school district WiFi and been restricted on certain social media and online sites? What kind of sites have been restricted on your phone while being connected? Here is my opinion on school web filters.  Some of the popular sites that are restricted at my school include Snapchat, Instagram, Youtube, Spotify or other streaming apps, and even sometimes Google sites.  Most students struggle with these restrictions because of sites that are blocked when trying to do a school project or research something. A lot of the times the site that the student is trying to get to is blocked, therefore forcing the student to not get the specif...

Claire Wicke P.6 Intro to Media Cedar Rapids Grade Changing: Cedar Rapids recently has changed it's grading system to "Standards Bases Grading" rather then grading tests with an "F" or "D" or even getting points from other assignments, quiz's, or attendance, parents can receive a indication that their kid is either exceeding, meeting, or comprehending what they need to know in school, in a specific class.  According to sources, this grading is much more accurate. The whole district is hoping to change their grading to standard base within the next five years. But, this grading also brings concern to parents and other students. The students with good and passing grades (A's, B's, and C's) are concerned that on college applications this new grading will not let them get into colleges they are wanting to.  Students will often receive a 1-4 (1 being little or no mastery and a 4 being advanced) with teacher feedback about the ...

Olivia Profile

Claire Wicke P.6 Intro to Media Olivia Profile As a kid Olivia has many fun and happy memories, but also sad and scary memories. Both she remembers very well and will always remember. Here are some of the craziest and happiest memories she has had.  Once when Olivia was very young her and her family went to thanksgiving at her grandma's house. She wanted to go outside and play on the play set with her and her cousins for a little as all the adults were inside. As she was play on the equipment she hit her head on a very hard cement wall and had to be rushed to the hospital. She ended up staying the night at the hospital because she injured her skull very badly and the doctors wanted to make sure she was okay and nothing bad would happen overnight. Olivia remembers that every time she would try to fall asleep, her grandma and her mom would wake her up, just to make sure she was okay. She remembers that in the moment that her head hurt, but after a few days, her head didn...

Ivanka Trumps 50,000 Dollar Donation to a Anti LGBTQ Megachurch

Claire  Wicke p.6 Intro to Media Ivanka Trumps 50,000 Dollar Donation to a Anti LGBTQ Megachurch  A few days ago stories and headlines came out saying Ivanka Trump donated 50,000 dollars to a anti lgbtq church. News came out saying that her purpose in doing this was to help migrant children who were separated from their families at the boarder. The Prestonwood Baptist Church has made it very clear that the church is NOT in support of the lgbtq community. Jack Grahm, who serves on Trump's Religious Council and is the Pastor of the church, has also made it clear by sending out homophobic and anti- lgbtq tweets and comments.  My personal opinion on this is that even though she donated to a close family "friends" church and donated to something that is supposed to help children who are separated at the boarder, I still think the church being donated to is not something that should be supported, especially by the presidents daughter. In June 2015 the law got passe...

Social Media

Claire Wicke P.6 Intro to Media Article: How Social Media Affects Teenagers: Publisher/ Author: Rachel Ehmke https://childmind.org/article/how-using-social-media-affects-teenagers/ Recent articles have shown that social media has been effecting teenagers more and more as it grows to younger audiences. As more social media platforms grow, teenagers get even more attached. Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and very popular sites that a lot of social teenagers visit daily. Many teenagers report that these sites have increased their anxiety, depression, and loneliness, because of how much time is spent on social media, scrolling through feeds every minute they get to. A lot of the time spent on social media adds up to less real life social skills because of how much time teens spend meeting people online, through a screen, instead of face to face. They get used to being able to delete a conversation and redo their sentences that when it comes to face to face, their...
