Cedar Rapids Grade Changing:
Cedar Rapids recently has changed it's grading system to "Standards Bases Grading" rather then grading tests with an "F" or "D" or even getting points from other assignments, quiz's, or attendance, parents can receive a indication that their kid is either exceeding, meeting, or comprehending what they need to know in school, in a specific class.
According to sources, this grading is much more accurate. The whole district is hoping to change their grading to standard base within the next five years. But, this grading also brings concern to parents and other students. The students with good and passing grades (A's, B's, and C's) are concerned that on college applications this new grading will not let them get into colleges they are wanting to.
Students will often receive a 1-4 (1 being little or no mastery and a 4 being advanced) with teacher feedback about the task or project a student performed. This helps students feel more successful and focus on what they are learning better, rather then being concerned with a letter grade they would receive.
This also helps the teachers understand what students learning rate is based on a 1, 2, or 3, instead of teaching the whole class at the same pace. Some students think a class time goes to slow, or to fast, so this resorts in students learning at the correct pace, perfect for them.
In SBG scores, a score goes up as a student learns, and tests do not effect the grade as much as regular grading would.
Overall Standard Based Grading breaks down learning into smaller learning targets, makes learning in the classroom easier for teachers and students, keeps track of a students process and makes giving feedback from a teacher easier, and much much more.
What do you think about this new grading style?
I think that ending the article with a question is not a bad idea, but at the same time some people can get confused by it... This is a good topic to build on and you hit on some good points, but I didn't really see what your thought is about this.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you decided to reflect on this topic. I'm not quite used to this form of grading, but this was very informative. How do you feel about standard based grading though?
ReplyDeleteThis is a topic students are most likely interested in, I don't really like the standard based grading. I feel like it complicates things a bit more than it should. You did a nice job at keeping your. opinion away! Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteI like your article a lot, as it is very relevant to me. I personally don't like standards based grading that much and prefer the way I am used to it being. I feel like your final question could have been stronger, but other than that I like it!
ReplyDeleteI liked this topic a lot, it is very relevant to us students and got information across about it. I like how you included a little bit about both sides. I'm not the biggest far of SBG but this is pretty good! I think you could have included your own opinion somewhere in her and made the last question slightly stronger, or taken it out. Good job though!
ReplyDeleteI like your article but HATE standard-based grading. I have no doubt that it will screw up so many college applications. If you haven't had standard-based grading, get ready for pointlessly complicated names and letter systems while also being less accurate than A-F.
ReplyDeleteOne criticism I have of your article's formatting is pretty small, but the paragraphs aren't indented. It makes it harder to see where a new one begins.
The article was good. I agree with Joel, I hate standards based grading. This was a great topic to talk about. I just didn't really like the question ending.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I hateee standard based grading, so if I did this topic it would end up being a rant. So nice job keeping your opinion away (like Maggie said). I like how you included both sides to the story. It also flowed really well. Nice job!
